The year was 2021. I was just a humble D&D and Delta Green enthusiast with a thirst for knowledge and a 15k word research project to complete.
What I found when set out was a pretty limited amount of data and information in the public domain about TTRPGs. So what better way to spend several months of my life than exploring how tabletop roleplayers have adapted to a more digital experience driven by the Pandemic, and starting to lay down a path across this data desert for other travellers?
To do that, I interviewed 15 DMs/GMs/players, and conducted an anonymous survey of about 200 people via Reddit and some other sites.
As promised to people involved in the project (although several months later than I had imagined), I am now able to share the findings of this project. I will update the blog with further research and insights that I come across and I think are interesting.
I will also lay out a plan to build some free tools to meet some of the challenges coming out of the research to make preparation easier, and games more fun. This is such a great hobby, and there is so much potential to make it more accessible and easier to run a table.
If anyone has any questions about the data, any suggestions for tools or assets that they think would be useful, or any general thoughts on TTRPGs let me know at adam@dragon-drop.co.uk or in the forums.
